Globular clusters, Hipparcos, and the age of the galaxy.

چکیده
We discuss the impact of the results from the recent Hipparcos astrometric satellite on distance estimates of galactic globular clusters. Recalibrating the clusters not only implies a relatively small change in the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud, and hence a rescaling of several estimates of the Hubble constant, but also leads to significantly younger cluster ages. Although the data are not yet conclusive, the results so far point to a likely resolution of the apparent paradox of a universe younger than its constituents, without requiring significant modifications to simple cosmological models.

The Relative Age of the Thin and Thick Galactic Disks
We determine the relative ages of the open cluster NGC 188 and selected Hipparcos field stars by isochrone fitting, and compare them to the age of the thick disk globular cluster 47 Tuc. The best fit age for NGC 188 was determined to be 6.5 ±1.0 Gyr. The solar metallicity Hipparcos field stars yielded a slightly older thin disk age, 7.5 ±0.7 Gyr. Two slightly metal-poor ([Fe/H] = −0.22) field s...
متن کاملYounger and brighter - New distances to globular clusters based on Hipparcos parallax measurements of local subdwarfs
We have used new parallax measurements, obtained by the Hipparcos satellite, of fifteen nearby, metal-poor stars to re-define the subdwarf mainsequence. All of these stars have parallaxes determined to an accuracy of at least 12 %. Comparing these measurements against previous ground-based data for nine stars reveals a systematic offset of 5 %, in the sense that the Hipparcos parallaxes are sma...
متن کاملDistances and Absolute Ages of Galactic Globular Clusters from Hipparcos Parallaxes of Local Subdwarfs
High precision trigonometric parallaxes from the Hipparcos satellite and accurate metal abundances ((Fe/H], O/Fe], and /Fe]) from high resolution spectroscopy for about 30 local subdwarfs have been used to derive distances and ages for a carefully selected sample of nine globular clusters. We nd that Hipparcos parallaxes are smaller than the corresponding ground-based measurements leading, to a...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...
